ASSOCHAM: Delhi Gets Breather,GZB Is The Most Polluted City.Noida No BetterSource: Metronow,March-13-2008

Ghaziabad is among the top 10 most dynamic cities in the world ,but failed to reduce pollution levels in the city.Already suffering from frequent power cuts, now the city has been ranked as the most polluted town in the National Capital Region.A survey done by anti-pollution cell of Assocham claims that pollution levels in Ghaziabad are alarming. There has been an unexpected increase in air pollution in ghaziabad. The suspended particles have gone up beyond 450 microgram per cubic meter from earlier levels of 300 mg per cubic meter in the last one year of air-pollution in parts of NCR,"said D.S. Rawat, secretary general,Assocham.

The degraded transport system in Ghaziabad coupled with pollution in Hindon river ghave increased the pollution levels to such exorbitant levels. The survey Claims that pollution levels have gone up to such an extent that its aquatic life is completely destroyed. The transportation system does not comply with the prescribed environmental rules ,particularly that takes off from Anand Vihar to new and old Ghaziabad is miserably emitting carbondioxide, sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide without any checks ,says the survey.Areas like Raj Nagar Mohan nagar,Modi Nagar are the most polluted in the city.

The picture of Noida is not too rosy,as the pollution levels are reasonably high here. There has been an unexpected increase in the suspended particles in noida ,which have increased to 400 mg per cubic metres from earlier levels of 200 mg per cubic meter in the last one year.Diesel-run vechicles like trucks and autos in Noida have primarily contributed to air pollution in the city, claims the survey.

Secondly, there has been rapid industrialization in Noida, which is responsible for air pollution in the city .An increased pollution level in the city means increase in respiratory diseases and decreased visibility at times."Bronchitis and other respiratoty ailments in NCR have become very common and the sitution is hardly improving,"said Rawat.
Delhi,on the other hand has been able to reduce the pollution levels from earlier levels of 300 mg per cubic meter to 200 micrograms per cubic meter .But stiil, areas like ITO,ISBT,Laxmi Nagar,Narayana,Mayapuri,Azadpur remain to be reasonably polluted in terms of air quality. In Delhi the levels of nitrogen dioxide are measured at 36 mg per cubic meter as against 50 mg per cubic meter of Noida & Ghaziabad. As a result of high levels of nitrogen dioxide in the air people suffer from heart & Lungs ailments.

CNG has been primarily responsible for lowering pollution levels in Delhi. The other reasons for Delhi's pollution levels coming down includes ,mandatory fittings of catalytic convertors and introduction of low sulphur Diesel.
