One Transport policy for NCR

Soon, one transport policy for NCR

New Delhi: Soon, one won’t have to rely solely on private cars to commute between Delhi and other NCR townships. The government is coming out with a common transport agreement with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh for unhindered movement of buses, autos and taxis in the entire NCR region. An agreement to the effect is expected to be signed between all the state governments in the next fortnight.

At a marathon meeting held between state transport departments of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh at the DTC headquarters on Wednesday, officials discussed the issue at length and agreed that since mobility between Delhi and satellite townships of Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad was increasing, there was need to improve connectivity between them.

At present, all the cities have their own internal modes of public transport and buses crossing the border need an inter-state permit. Commuters wishing to take autorickshaws or taxis, can’t do so as they are not permitted to cross over into another state. ‘‘The buses plying between Delhi and Noida are dirty and filled to capacity almost at all hours. Even autos charge exorbitantly, if they agree to cross the border. There is no option but to use a private car to commute,’’ said Vandana Shrivastava, a resident of IP Extension who works in Noida. She added that Noida is barely 15 minutes away but still it’s an everyday hassle to get to work.

The transport heads of the three states discussed the logistics of having an common transport agreement, in terms of a unified fare structure and changes required in permits of public transport vehicles.

‘‘It will take a few more sittings to sort out all the issues. Paperwork is in the final stages now. We are expecting to have an agreement signed in the next 15 days.Commuter comfort will be given first priority,’’ said a transport official. TNN
