DMRC and GDA sign agreement for extension of Metro to Vaishali
NEW DELHI: For thousands of people who commute between Delhi and Ghaziabad daily, the wait for an efficient and comfortable mode of transport will be over by September 2010. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) signed an agreement on Monday for extension of the Delhi Metro to Vaishali in Ghaziabad. The memorandum of understanding was signed between DMRC Director (Projects) Vijay Anand and GDA Vice-Chairman S.K. Dwivedi.
The DMRC will extend the existing Indraprastha–Yamuna Bank–Anand Vihar Inter-State Bus Terminal metro corridor to Ghaziabad for a length of about 2.57 km up to Vaishali.
While the cost of the rolling stock will be borne by DMRC, the GDA will provide land for the project free of cost, said a DMRC official.
Station facilities
About 2.5 hectare of land for station and station facilities, including parking, will be provided for in the Rs.2.60-crore project. “The DMRC will be responsible for operation and maintenance of the line and there will be no State taxes levied on the Corporation,” the official said.
Construction of the entire network would be completed in two and a half years, starting from the day of signing of the MoU.
Multi-storey parking
There will be two stations at Ghaziabad — Kaushambi and Vaishali — which will both be elevated. “The service is expected to take a significant number of vehicles off Delhi’s roads. The GDA will provide a multi-storey parking lot near Vaishali station, which would accommodate 500 to 1,000 vehicles. About 1,000 people are expected to avail themselves of the service when it commences in 2010,” said Anuj Dayal, Chief Public Relations Officer of DMRC.
Tenders for award of works would be invited shortly, he added.
