Two major flyover projects, NH-24

Money sanctioned for two major flyover projects

One grade separator to be constructed at Ghazipur intersection of NH-24; other at NH-1

‘Completion of the NH-1 project will provide much needed relief to inter-State commuters’

NEW DELHI: For lakhs of people living in East Delhi and adjoining Ghaziabad, travel to the rest of the Capital is all set to become faster and easier with the Delhi Government’s Expenditure Finance Committee approving a sum of Rs.249 crore on Monday for construction of a new grade separator at the Ghazipur intersection of National Highway-24.

The Committee, chaired by Delhi Finance Minister A. K. Walia, also sanctioned Rs.138 crore for a grade separator at the National Highway-1 T-point in Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar.

Both these projects would be commissioned before the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

After the meeting, Dr. Walia announced that the two grade separators were being constructed to facilitate free flow of traffic and reduce congestion of heavy traffic. He expressed confidence that they would not only help streamline vehicular movement but also lead to saving of valuable fuel and travel time. The projects are also expected to result in reduction of air pollution and accidents.

The Minister said Rs.249 crore had been approved for construction of the three-level Ghazipur grade separator that would help in free flow of traffic for the Yamuna Sports Complex, one of the venues of the Commonwealth Games. This flyover and underpass project is targeted to be completed within 27 months.

According to the project plan, the construction of the underpass would take place along Road No.56 while a flyover will come up on National Highway-24. There would also be a rotary at the middle level to allow for turning of vehicles in different directions. Once commissioned, this project would provide relief to lakhs of people who have to endure huge traffic jams on National Highway-24 at present. It would also ease movement of vehicles along Road No. 56 that is a major arterial road for East Delhi.

In the case of the grade separator at the T-point in Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar and National Highway-1, Dr. Walia said the flyover would be constructed along NH-1 and completed within 30 months from the award of work.

This project too is expected to contribute significantly in ensuring signal-free traffic on G.T. Karnal Road. It would also provide much needed relief to inter-State commuters who at present get stranded for hours on this busy highway.
