Green Light For NH-24 Project

Road Transport Ministry Shows Green Light For NH-24 Project In GhaziabadTHE WIDENING project of the stretch of National Highway (NH) 24 in Ghaziabad is finally going to see the light of the day. After the approval from the Ministry of Road Transport and High ways (MoRTH), the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is now working out the modalities of the project.
According to senior MoRTH officials, the Ghaziabad and Noida officials had made a presentation on the necessity of the widening of the highway, which also serves as an approach to several upcoming townships and residen- tial colonies of Ghaziabad.

"Though the highway is meant for long distance traffic, the National Highway -24 caters to a large volume of local traffic of Noida and Ghaziabad. Ideally, the development authorities of the two districts should have devel- oped slip roads, but now when they are so insisting and even ready to share the cost the ministry has no objection, said a senior MoRTH official.

"We have referred the project to the NHAI which is now working out the modalities," he added.
According to NHAI officials, the widening is expected to cost almost Rs 90 crore.
While the NHAI will bear 50 per cent of the project cost, the remaining 50 per cent will be contributed equally by the Ghaziabad development Au thorit (GDA), Noida authority and Uttar Pradesh Hous ing and Development Board.

According to senior NHAI officials, about 19.2 kilometre-long stretch of the highway will be widened from four and six lanes to eight-lane.
"It will start from 0.8 kilometre point of the highway (UP Gate border) and will go up to 20.0-kilometre point. It is bumper-to-bumper on this stretch especially during the peak hours.

Apart from the local traffic, the widened road will also benefit a large number of people coming from various Uttar Pradesh cities during the Commonwealth Games in 2010," said GDA vice chairman S.K.Dwivedi.
With the public workds department of delhi already widening teh natioonal highway in Delhi and constructing flyovers and underpass wherever required, the driving time from the upcoming townships of Ghaziabad and Noida will come down drastically .

This is what is being looked forward to after the Ghaziabad stretch of the highway is widened.
Apart from the widening, the project will also include the construction of underpasses to connect the residential colonies of Ghaziabad with Noida. Officials said the underpass will further help in decongesting the national highway "We will start the tender process . as soon as we get the contribution promised by the three agencies of Uttar Pradesh," a senior NHAI official said.
