GDA plan for guest houses

Plan for guesthouses hits a roadblock, Kaushambi RWA and GDA have locked horns over the issue
The Ghaziabad Development Authority's (GDA) preparations for the Commonwealth Games have once again hit a roadblock. The Kaushambi Residents Welfare Association (KARWA) and the GDA have locked horns over developing guesthouses in the area. The issue got a setback when, after initial announcement of developing guesthouses on 14 plots, the GDA increased the number to 19 plots in Kaushambi alone. There are only nine other plots being developed in other areas.

"A signature campaign was undertaken with 3,000 participants and on the basis of GDA advertisement we have filed objection on the project in Kaushambi. Each plot, as per GDA announce- ment, will have 20-22 rooms.

This will make the area an Why other Paharganj.

should Kaushambi have such a large number of guesthouses? There are other areas on the border as well?" says Dr. K. K. Sehgal, member of the delegation that took up the matter with GDA and former president, Kaushambi RWA.

The RWA has also submitted a list of 250 rooms available near Kaushambi in hotels in malls like East Delhi Mall and Pacific. The hotels in Seemant Vihar have 150 rooms and the Studio Apartments in Kaushambi has 440 flats available which can be developed as rooms for visitors during Commonwealth Games.

"Kaushambi already has seven com mercial GDA towers that are lying unsold in areas like Neelam Vihar. Out of the seven, one has been developed as Blue Star Hotel having 48 well-furnished rooms and two banquet halls. GDA can develop these hotels or guesthouses. This will limit commercialisation of only a certain portion of Kaushambi and not spread it," says Sehgal.

The GDA officials say that this project is part of the UP government order to provide 1,000 rooms during the Commonwealth Games in 2010. The residents, however, say that GDA should not blindly start construction on 19 plots and these guesthouses should come up in other areas as well.
"There has been no environmental impact study conducted by the GDA yet. The area infrastructure is not equipped to manage the additional load of population. There will be rampant use of generators. The GDA has not given a thought to all these repercussions," says president, KARWA, N. Rajamani.
"Hotel projects are coming up all over the city If the objections have been raised .

we will look into their viability It is only after verification of the claims and objections raised that the project will come up.
After verification by a committee, guesthouses will be sanctioned only on merit basis," says VC, GDA, S. K. Dwivedi.
