Work begins to widen entrance to UP on NH-24

Good news for commuters of NH 24 battered by hours-long traffic jams and chaos. Relief is in sight as work for improving mobility at UP Gate has started. According to officials, widening of the entrance to UP on NH-24 has begun and is likely to be completed by March-end.

UP Gate is the entrance to UP on the National Highway NH 24 that connects Delhi to Lucknow running 438 kilometres. NH 24 is not only the connecting road for vehicles coming from Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, but an access point for lakhs of citizens who reside in Indirapuram, Vasundhara, Vaishali and Kaushambi in Ghaziabad and several residential, institutional and commercial sectors of Noida.

Besides, it is also used by trucks going towards the Inland Container Depot (ICD) at Patparganj, the wholesale fish and poultry market, the vegetable and fruits market, the MCD abattoir and the garbage landfill site. Given the volume of vehicles and the ongoing construction work of the Ghazipur Grade Separator, the traffic scene always remains chaotic. Traffic jams have become the order of the day here.
During peak hours, the queue of vehicles reaches Mayur Vihar Phase-II from the UP Gate. The waiting time, which is 15 to 20 minutes at any time in the day, extends to around 40 minutes during peak hours. At night things are worse when trucks are allowed to ply on NH-24.

The Rs five-crore project of GDA is expected to provide major relief to traffic. Construction for the UP Gate police chowki has already begun and is targeted to complete by the month end. Soon after the construction of the new police chowki, the older one will be razed and the road will be widened from there. Construction of the new police chowki began last Friday.

In addition, not all those heading towards Delhi from Indirapuram or Noida Sector 62 will have to face the red lights. The road will be converted into a four-lane highway. Two lanes going towards Indirapuram will be connected to link road while the other two lanes will be used for traffic moving towards Delhi.
The lanes used for direct commuting to Delhi will have no traffic lights and commuters can move freely. Moreover, a new loop is under construction for traffic coming from Delhi on NH 24 moving towards link road.

After the construction of the new connecting loop, the traffic flow in the two lanes will be distributed in four lanes thus reducing the traffic. In addition, the loop connecting the Vaishali link road to NH 24 will soon be converted into four lanes. The work is soon to begin.

Underpasses will also be constructed to divert the heavy traffic from the road. "It was very important to work on the national highway as it was becoming a major traffic trauma here. Now at least people can heave a sigh of relief as they will be free from getting stuck in jams on the highway every day," says one of the members of Federation of Indirapuram.

"We were worried about the traffic chaos caused at the UP Gate. We are planning to widen the link road by 7.5 metres. We are also planning to beautify the area. This is just the first phase of work. In the second phase of work, we plan to take up the Dabur road and link road leading to Vijay Nagar," says Anil Garg, chief engineer, GDA.
