NH-24 from Delhi to Dasna to be widened

New Delhi: To improve the connectivity between Delhi and parts of Ghaziabad and Noida, the highways ministry has now sanctioned the widening of the 20-km stretch of NH-24. The existing 4-lane stretch between Uttar Pradesh border and Dasna will be widened to six lanes.
The project will cost Rs 128 crore, according to an official document issued by the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH). The stretch will get five underpasses and 23 existing culverts will be widened.

The document states that the government took this decision in response to the persistent demands of residents of Ghaziabad, Noida and Indirapuram, besides public representatives and media persons. Officials said the work would be awarded soon so that the task of widening starts at the earliest. The 8-laning work, which is already underway on the 8-km stretch between Nizamuddin bridge and Ghaziabad border is expected to complete by the end of this year.

Presently, the 4-laned road from Ghaziabad border to Dasna is one of the most congested NH corridors in the country. Once completed, this stretch would become almost signal-free. Unlike the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway, this stretch will not be made a toll road. Sources said this decision was taken considering that a large section of the traffic using this stretch is local. The traffic on this road is expected to grow in view of increased occupancy in residential areas along NH-24 including Indirapuram and Crossings Republic, the two big sub-cities of Ghaziabad. Sources also said though the project could have been constructed on the BOT (toll) mode, they went for cash contract sensing that the toll mode could invite strong opposition from road users.

Though the plan was conceived a few years ago, somehow it did not take off. NH-24 between Nizamuddin Bridge and Indirapuram is one of the busiest stretches during peak hours. About two years ago, the daily traffic movement on this stretch was nearly 1.4 lakh passenger car units (PCUs).

In the recent years, areas beyond Ghaziabad border have emerged as prime residential destination for people working in Delhi. A traffic survey by RITES in 2008 had shown that vehicular growth on this stretch had increased by almost 200% more than the highway’s carrying capacity.
